Could Junior Caminero start 2024 with the Rays?

Junior Caminero Aims to Make Rays Infield Debut in 2024 Season

Junior Caminero, the 20-year-old Dominican prospect, may be on the brink of securing a spot in the Tampa Bay Rays infield for the 2024 season. Despite having yet to play a single game at the Triple-A level, Caminero’s impressive performance in the minor leagues and his call-up to the Rays’ big team last September have positioned him as a possible candidate to fill in the infield.

While the most realistic scenario points towards Caminero starting in Triple-A, the uncertainty surrounding his fellow Dominican Wander Franco and Taylor Walls’ hip surgery may create an opportunity for him to prove himself during training and earn a position in the Rays’ infield.

Caminero is focused on controlling what he can and not worrying about his potential Triple-A assignment. “The team already has that decision. Wherever the team sends me, I try to do the work and leave everything in the hands of God,” he said.

His control over his game has been evident from his impressive performance in the minor leagues, including being named the Most Valuable Player of the Southern League in 2023. His strong hitting statistics and call-up to the big league last season demonstrate his potential to make an impact on the Rays’ lineup.

Reflecting on his debut in the Major Leagues, Caminero shared how being in the presence of stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and being a part of the Rays’ fifth consecutive classification has shaped his experience. He emphasized that he is determined to continue working hard and make significant contributions to the team.

Caminero is aware of his status as the Rays’ No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 6 prospect but is focused on staying grounded and continuing to work toward success.

In addition to his aspirations for the upcoming season, Caminero had his first experience playing in the Dominican winter baseball league, where he excelled and gained valuable experience playing alongside veteran players.

As he continues training at the Rays facilities, Caminero remains eager to establish himself with the team and is determined to face notable pitchers like Shohei Ohtani in the future.

With his talent, determination, and strong work ethic, Caminero is poised to make a significant impact on the Rays’ infield in the upcoming season.
