Wout van Aert really wanted to excel in the big cobblestone classics this year. But now the Belgian superstar’s dream was painfully shattered. Van Aert sustains serious injuries in a violent fall.
A small touch caused a serious fall. Wout van Aert was seriously injured in a mass fall in front of the upcoming Tour of Flanders (March 31) and Paris-Roubaix (April 7) monuments. The 29-year-old Belgian crashed on Wednesday with several other riders in the cycling semi-classic “Across Flanders” about 68 kilometers from the finish in Waregem and had to give up. At first glance, the images of the fall suggested worse injuries.
Shortly after van Aert and the other people who fell were given initial treatment, the cycling superstar from Belgium, who has won nine stages of the Tour de France so far, received the devastating diagnosis. Van Aert suffered a fractured collarbone and several broken ribs. “It is unclear how long recovery will take. Van Aert will definitely be out of the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Amstel Gold Race,” his team told Visma on X on Wednesday evening.

According to media reports, van Aert, who was visibly dazed on the asphalt after the fall, had to be put on a stretcher by paramedics, crying. For three other professionals, the race through Flanders also ended due to the accident. In addition to van Aert, the Danish professional Mads Pedersen and the Eritrean Biniam Girmay were also involved in the collision.
