Chinese Swimmers Excel at 2024 World Swimming Championships in Doha

China News Service, Beijing, February 17. The 2024 World Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar continued on the 16th local time with the Chinese team achieving remarkable success. The Chinese team secured victory in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and the men’s 200m breaststroke, bringing their total gold medals to 6, surpassing the previous 5 gold medals won in the previous World Championships. With a total of 6 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze, the Chinese swimming team currently ranks second in the medal list.

In the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final, Chinese athletes Ji Xinjie, Wang Haoyu, Pan Zhanle, and Zhang Zhanshuo worked together to stage an incredible comeback. Ji Xinjie initiated the race, and Wang Haoyu followed up, improving their position. Pan Zhanle made up the gap in the third leg, and Zhang Zhanshuo surged ahead in the final leg, securing the gold medal with a time of 7 minutes, 01 seconds, and 84 seconds.

The Chinese team’s success continued with teenager Dong Zhihao stunningly coming from behind to win the men’s 200-meter breaststroke final in 2 minutes, 07 seconds, and 94 seconds. Dong Zhihao credited his gold medal to the coaching team’s strategic planning and expressed hopes of improving and aiming for a top-eight finish at the Paris Olympics.

Additionally, in the women’s 100-meter freestyle final, Hong Kong’s He Shibei secured the silver medal in 52.56 seconds, while Chinese player Yu Yiting advanced to the finals of the women’s 50-meter butterfly semifinals.

Looking ahead, the Doha World Swimming Championships on the 17th local time will feature six finals including the women’s 50-meter butterfly, men’s 50-meter freestyle, women’s 200-meter backstroke, men’s 100-meter butterfly, women’s 800-meter freestyle, and mixed 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
