Li Xuanhao Wins China’s 50th Go World Championship

The excitement was palpable in Rugao, Jiangsu as Li Xuanhao emerged victorious in the fifth “Dream Lily Cup” World Go Open finals on May 4. The nine-dan white player defeated Dang Yifei in a thrilling match that lasted 168 hands, securing a 3-1 victory and clinching the championship title.

This win marked a significant milestone for Li Xuanhao, who claimed his first world championship trophy and became China’s 24th Go world champion. What’s more, this victory also marked China’s 50th Go world championship, highlighting the country’s dominance in the sport.

Throughout the competition, Li Xuanhao showcased his prowess on the board, defeating formidable opponents such as Aizumi Teno, Shibano Toramaru, Shin Zhenzhen, Tan Xiao, and Liu Yuhang. His final showdown with Dang Yifei was a true test of skill and strategy, with Li Xuanhao ultimately emerging as the worthy victor.

Reflecting on his journey to the championship, Li Xuanhao acknowledged the challenges he faced, stating, “I was not in good shape in the first half of last year. Fortunately, in the second half of the year, I found my way back.” He credited the Dream Lily Cup for helping him rediscover his form and lead him to victory.

In the post-game interview, Li Xuanhao expressed respect for his opponent, saying, “Dang Yifei and I are familiar with each other. He knows the basics well, so there was no special preparation needed. Whoever plays the white chess piece between us has a slight advantage.”

The fifth “Dream Lily Cup” World Go Open was organized by the China Go Association, with Meng Lily Home Technology Co., Ltd. as the host and the support of the Jiangsu Provincial Go Association. The championship prize of RMB 1.8 million went to Li Xuanhao, with the runner-up receiving RMB 600,000.
