[Epoch Times, June 20, 2022](Reporter Chen An compiled report) The 2026 World Cup is about to be held in Vancouver and Toronto, but Edmonton has lost the opportunity to participate in the men’s soccer championship jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

On Thursday, June 16, FIFA announced that the expanded 48 teams will play in 16 North American cities, including Vancouver and Toronto in Canada, and Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Dallas in the United States. , Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and New York/New Jersey. Mexico will also host games in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Edmonton has struggled to bid for the hosts.

Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi said, “We did everything we could to bring these games to Edmonton because we knew we were a great host city.”

He added that city officials had been working late the past few nights to assure Fifa that Edmonton could host games.

When the Alberta government announced $110 million in funding for the bid earlier this year, it required Edmonton to host at least five games, exceeding the bid proposal.

“We have assured FIFA that we will work with FIFA to create flexibility if there are any doubts about the city’s commitment or the conditions in Alberta,” Sohi said.

Culture Minister Ron Orr said in a statement that the provincial government was disappointed Edmonton was not selected.

“The Alberta government worked hard and invested heavily to help with bids. Our province hosts countless world-class sporting events. Commonwealth Stadium, the largest facility in Western Canada, makes for an excellent host,” he said. “Unfortunately, Fans won’t be able to experience the beauty and energy of Edmonton and Alberta.”
