You never get tired of the taste of victory and yet another awakening after having raised and celebrated a trophy has become a pleasant habit. This is also confirmed by the co-president of Imoco Conegliano Pietro Maschio: «Sooner or later there will also be a defeat, but I don’t know how I will face it. Now I enjoy the Super Cup and think about the rest of the season ».
It seems prehistoric when we talked about the “dry match syndrome” regarding the repeated defeats of Conegliano against Novara: the 2018 and 2019 Italian Cup finals, the 2017 Super Cup and the 2019 Champions League lost against Igor were added to the two consecutive defeats against Vakifbank in the final of the Champions 2017 and in the semifinal of the following year. Since then the trend has reversed and the Imoco has always hit the full target, beating the competition both in the regular season, both in the home and away matches, and in the dry races: one after the other eight trophies arrived, all those who were up for grabs, a yellow-blue monograph that is filling news and almanacs. «The team of those years had characteristics that allowed us to play at a high level, but with one less factor called Paola Egonu. With her, the group found the right balance and the ability to better deal with certain situations in crucial moments: work and cohesion did the rest ».
Looking even further back, at the early periods of this still young history, given that the club’s tenth season has just begun, one can see another difference: there were just three finals played in four years between 2012 and 2016, only one was missing (the one for the 2017 Scudetto) in the last five. “At the beginning we were inexperienced on many things: we went by trial and error trying to do the right things. Certainly when in 2012 we sat around a table to start we didn’t think we already had 14 trophies on the showcase: the maximum goal was to make a playoff, with a team that was competitive, considering the budget available ».
Even after the Modena race, a sincere and not at all obvious refrain was heard and read, which every panther has been repeating for years, even if it has just arrived at the Gialloblù home: “We thank the club that has built a magnificent group and does not make us miss nothing”. The growth of the Imoco collective has been gradual and constant, thanks to the programming skills, to the right choices on players and technical and medical staff. «In athletic training today much more scientific and performing methods are adopted than a few years ago and this allows us to be at the top. We ourselves as managers have acquired more awareness and our tranquility affects the whole environment: there is no performance anxiety, but the right tension before the important appointments ».
The result of Saturday, but also of the repeated successes of the last two years, is based on a skill. “The difference compared to Novara the other night and compared to our recent past is that we do not let ourselves be discouraged by a negative moment: the third and fourth set started with one of the two teams down 1-5, but we reacted, they didn’t. “.
The few doubts mixed with fear that hovered before the game dissolved along the way. «Without Sylla and Fahr and with the crushing department in a completely new field we could have expected some difficulties, which actually occurred in the first half of the race. I must say that, compared to last year, this group has an even wider margin for improvement ».
