FC Bayern is deep in crisis. The collaboration with Thomas Tuchel seems to be hanging by a thread. Successors are already being traded, including a multiple Champions League winner and a former Bayern terror.
The captain of the German national team is also surprised. “It surprises me very much that FC Bayern is now having such difficulties,” said İlkay Gündoğan to the German Press Agency, when asked about the sporting crisis at the record champions. The Munich team recently suffered their third competitive defeat in a row in a 3-2 defeat against VfL Bochum and are already eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen in second place in the Bundesliga. At the center of the criticism: Thomas Tuchel.
However, Gündogan doesn’t let that happen. With Tuchel, Bayern “actually has one of the best coaches in Europe. I can only say positive things about him from my year-long work with BVB,” explained the former Borussia Dortmund professional. Tuchel is “tactically outstanding and an extremely honest, open guy. I personally got along very well with this style,” said the FC Barcelona professional.
Despite the job guarantee from his boss Jan-Christian Dreesen, Tuchel is expecting intensive discussions about himself in the next few days before the top game against RB Leipzig on Saturday. Some candidates for a possible successor to Tuchel have already been named in the Bayern environment.
Zidane as coach at FC Bayern?
The “Corriere dello Sport” brings an illustrious name into play: Zinédine Zidane. “Zizou is the first name in Bayern’s mind,” says a report in the Italian sports newspaper. The German record champions even contacted the former world star before the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League against Lazio Rome (0-1). “Zidane would be the first choice to succeed Tuchel in the summer,” writes the Gazette. According to Sky, there were at least internal discussions about Zidane at FC Bayern.

Zidane, who has been without a coaching job since leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, recently emphasized in an interview with “beIN Sports”: “It is always my goal to become a coach again. I’m currently taking more time for other things. But the goal is to come back.” However, the French football hero is not the only potential successor to Tuchel.

The name Xabi Alonso comes up again and again. Former Bayern shock as Tuchel replacement?
An old friend is also considered a candidate for Bayern. According to a report from Sky, Ole Gunnar Solskjær could also take over as coach at Bayern. The 50-year-old Norwegian is on the market and most recently coached Manchester United. However, there have not yet been any concrete discussions between Bayern and the former striker of the English record champions, who shocked Bayern with his goal in the 1999 Champions League final. Sports director Christoph Freund has been following Solskjær’s career path closely for years. If anything, the Norwegian would probably be an interim solution in the event that Tuchel is fired during the current season.
