Corfu, February 20, 2022 – One of the 12 missing persons was found alive Grimaldi Lines ferry that is it set on fire in the night between Thursday and Friday offshore Corfu, on the route between Greece and Brindisi. And it may not be the only one. The survivor was spotted aft of the nave Euroferry Olympia, where the stake is not yet completely extinguished. He is a Lithuanian citizen. Greek TV Skai confirms this, showing one Photo survivor as he descends the ship’s ladders to reach rescuers.
Survivors and missing
“Fortunately, I’m alive” are the first words spoken by the man, who remained on board for over two days during and after the fire. He appears to be in good health: he will be screened in the hospital.
The man also reportedly told rescuers he heard voices on the ferry. There is therefore the hope of finding other people alive, despite the smoke and the temperature hot for the flames start from the garage and never completely tame.
In the hours following the fire, 278 people had been saved, including about twenty Italians. Today another Grimaldi Lines ship, Florencia, transferred 48 to Brindisi. According to the passenger list, those missing are now 11, seven Bulgarians, three Greeks and one Turk. All truckers, like the Lithuanian saved today. They were probably asleep in their means when the fire broke out, for reasons still unknown.
Spill risk
Meanwhile, the Italian minister for the ecological transition Roberto Cingolani reassures about the probable spill of polluting material into the sea. On board were 800 cubic meters of fuel and 23 tons of dangerous goods. “I am in contact with the head of the RAM, at the moment the hull does not show evidence of fractures that could suggest a spill. Priority must be given to the search for the missing. The fire is about to be extinguished, so first it arrives in the harbor ship, first you put everything in safety.
The testimony of an Italian
An Italian hauler, Vittorio Padrevino, he told the waiting reporters that he didn’t think he could make it: “I sent a farewell sms to my wife. I was very convinced that death took us all. They called us they divided us into two groups and then there was the abandon ship. I thought about dying, we saw death. ” “The organization was wonderful, they were very good, very smart young guys”, she added, “I can’t wait to go home. We Italians have found each other and strengthened”.
