by admin

Gerd Muller, striker and symbol of Bayern Munich, died this morning at the age of 75, announcing it with a press release. Nicknamed “der bomber” for his familiarity with the life of the net, Muller had scored 68 goals in 62 games for the German national team, with whom he had won the European Championships in 1972 and the World Cup in 1974, scoring in both finals. With Bayern he had scored 566 goals in 607 official matches.

In his career, with the jersey of the club he joined in 1964, he had won “the Intercontinental Cup, three European Cups and a Cup Winners’ Cup, as well as four Bundesliga titles and four German Cups”. Then he had worked in the club’s youth academy, and now he leaves his wife Uschi and daughter Nicole.

Muller, who still holds the record for the highest number of goals scored in the Bundesliga, with 365, closed his career as a football player in the North American Nasl, in the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, and in the past, after the end of the competitive activity, he had suffered from problems of alcoholism and depression. For some years he had been suffering from senile dementia.

«Today is a sad and dark day for Bayern and all its fans – said the president of the Bavarians Herbert Hainer – He was the greatest striker there has ever been, a beautiful person and a character in the world of football. We are united in the condolences of the family and of his wife Uschi. Bayern wouldn’t be the club we all love today without Gerd Muller. His name and his memory will live on forever ».
