Spanish football legend and 1960 Ballon d’Or winner Luis Suarez has died in Milan at the age of 88. This was confirmed by Inter Milan on Sunday (07/09/2023) on its website.
Suarez played for the club between 1961 and 1970, and later took over as coach for the Italians several times. The former midfielder played 32 caps for Spain and became European champions with the team in 1964. From 1988 to 1991 he coached Spain’s national team.
“The legendary former Nerazzurri midfielder has died at the age of 88. We are deeply saddened by the departure of Luisito,” Inter wrote. Suarez inspired generations of football enthusiasts and was a unique footballer and a great Inter player.
Greatest personal honor as a Barca player
Although Suarez started his football career in Spain, he has spent most of his career in Italy. In 1960, while still a FC Barcelona player, he was the first male footballer in Spain to be awarded the Ballon d’Or as the best footballer in Europe. In 1973 he ended his active career and worked as a coach until 1995.
