Football, the league is born, a Serie A never seen before

The new Serie A gets underway and does it like never before. Length of the season, intensity of the rhythm of the matches – very strong before the winter break – and, more generally, customs and traditions are new items to be paid for at the first winter World Cup in history. We, in Qatar, will not be there, but our championship will stop from 13 November to 4 January to “free” all the players interested in the edition of the World Cup: a stop that, in cascade, has produced a long series of side effects.

The appointment for the start of the asymmetrical calendar has been brought forward by about a month, a little more, compared to tradition: the scene will be for today (12 noon) to allow the clubs, but also the fans, to take note of the away matches, to be able to book hotels and flights in the height of summer since, this time, there will be four days in August, from 13 or 14 to 31 for the sake of the variables of an open market.

The new Serie A ranks second in terms of duration if the window on the pitch is that of the 2000s: only the season that ended with Capello’s Roma championship lasted longer, the last match on 17 June 2011. The intensity will touch his high point just before the mid-November break as teams in Europe will find themselves playing twenty-one duels in three months. Retreats and strategies, preparation and objectives: everything will be reshuffled by the most unprecedented championship there is.

Thinking of a surprise when the games have to be made is not so out of place because no one knows how the Qatar veterans will return and their recovery times. Serie A is not an expression of “world” football, but will be the object of the turbulence that the World Cup generates and drags on in winter. Today, we will experience a long, unprecedented, in some ways risky journey. And asymmetrical like a year ago.
