Die AS Rom has resigned from coach with immediate effect Jose Mourinho separated. The Italian Serie A club announced this. Daniele De Rossi will be his successor. “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and commitment since his arrival at the club,” said the Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin in a message. Mourinho’s time at AS Roma will be remembered fondly. However, an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. The 60-year-old Portuguese has been the coach at the Roman club since 2021. With Mourinho his entire coaching staff is also leaving. “We wish José and his assistants all the best for their future work,” it continued. The club wants to provide further information about the new coaching staff shortly. For Roma, the current season is one of the worst in a long time. After 20 games, the club is in ninth place in Serie A with 29 points. Most recently, the Giallorossi were unsuccessful in three games in a row. But there had already been repeated rumors that the 60-year-old could leave the Romans early despite a valid contract up to and including June 30, 2024.
Mourinho is considered both one of the most successful and most controversial coaches in world football. Before his time in Rome, he coached, among others FC Chelsea, Inter Madrid, Real Madrid as well as Manchester United. He took over in May 2021 after his time at Tottenham Hotspur from his predecessor Paulo Fonseca the Romans. In the 2021/2022 season he won the Conference League with AS Roma and was also in the final of the Europa League in the 2022/2023 season. (dpa)
