Freiburg wins in Gladbach: Streich celebrates at the start of his farewell tour

As of: April 1, 2024 12:00 a.m

He couldn’t have imagined the beginning of the end to be more beautiful: Shortly after announcing his departure from SC Freiburg, Christian Streich celebrated a win against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. Thanks to goals from Michael Gregorisch (7th minute), Merlin Röhl (47th) and Ritsu Doan (57th), there was a clear 3-0 (1-0) away win for Freiburg.

Seven more weeks – then after twelve and a half years it will be over for Christian Streich at SC Freiburg. During the international break, the long-term coach from Breisgau announced his decision not to extend his contract after this season.

On May 18th, Streich will be on the line for the last time as Freiburg coach in the away game at Union Berlin.

But until then, Streich and the sports club want to add another chapter to their shared success story. Freiburg could still qualify for the European Cup – especially if Bayer Leverkusen wins the DFB Cup title, making seventh place a position that enables a future in European business. And the SCF wanted to take advantage of this opportunity at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Freiburg’s Gregoritsch hits the opponent’s goal and saves on his own line

It only took a few minutes before the guests backed up these ambitions with action. After a long throw-in, Maximilian Eggestein got the ball and tried a shot that was deflected right onto Michael Gregorisch’s head – and the striker nodded in from close range to make it 1-0 (7th). The Austrian had already scored three times in the international match against Turkey (6-1) during the week, and now he continued his run.

But Gregoritsch was not only important in attack, but also in defense. Gladbach were especially dangerous from set pieces and were almost allowed to celebrate after a corner when Nico Elvedi maneuvered the ball towards the Freiburg goal – but Gregoritsch saved Freiburg’s lead on the line (23rd).

Otherwise, Borussia dominated the game, but was too harmless. The statistics spoke for the hosts with 57 percent of duels won, 11:7 shots on goal and 55 percent of ball possession, but Freiburg was the more efficient team.

Gladbach cracked Freiburg’s double pack after the break

The latter continued in the second half. And so Freiburg decided the game quite quickly. Gregoritsch was involved again at 2-0 – Jonas Omlin was able to defuse his shot, but the goalkeeper, who had returned after a seven-month break due to a shoulder injury, looked bad when Merlin Röhl’s follow-up shot into the near corner (48th).

After the SCF needed a little luck with the first two goals, the team showed their entire footballing class with the third goal. The guests overwhelmed the Gladbachers with their quick, short passing game, and in the end Ritsu Doan converted a cross from Eggestein to make it 3-0 (57′).

After this double blow, the Gladbachers were no longer able to rebel – and so the Borussia team could not get rid of their last relegation worries. Although the lead over the last three places is currently comfortable at eight points, in performances like the one against Freiburg that is no guarantee of staying in the league.
