With four games to go, Standard remains stuck in the twilight zone above the danger line. “From now on, every match is a final,” says Gilles Dewaele.
For Gilles Dewaele it was not a nice reunion with his ex-club. His first starting position in three months ended with a painful defeat. “We barely gave anything away defensively, but offensively it was far too little,” the defender realizes. “Westerlo is not a top team, but we have barely been able to create anything.” Paralyzed by relegation stress? “That can play a role, yes. There is certainly some form of stress within the group. Standard should never be in this situation. But the reality is now, we realize that all too well. Are some players scared on the field? It’s not positive stress. Any mistake can have catastrophic consequences. But we have to move on. Every match is a final from now on. Once on the field we have to forget the context, otherwise we risk cramping up due to the tension.”
Leko: “We shouldn’t want to play football like Barcelona”
Ivan Leko was anything but satisfied with what his team showed. “I don’t know how many times I have to say it to my players. We are fighting against relegation! Then you shouldn’t want to play football like Barça. We lacked game intelligence. We didn’t feel this match at all. After halftime we just did whatever.”
