It promises to be another extremely exciting title battle in Belgium, possibly until the last match day. What if two (or more) teams end up with equal points in the Champions’ Play-offs?
After six match days in the Champions’ Play-offs, Anderlecht and Club Brugge are joint first with 42 points, Union is third with 41 points. If this were the final score, Anderlecht would be champions. Both Anderlecht and Club Brugge received half a point when the points were halved because they finished the regular competition with an odd number of points. But Anderlecht was second after the regular competition and Club Brugge only fourth. The association regulations state that purple and white therefore get the advantage.
After the six out of six against Antwerp, Union is also still fully in contention for the title. The people of Brussels are now one point out of the first two. If Union can catch up one more point and finish the Champions’ Play-offs with the same number of points as Anderlecht and Club, then they will be champions. Because Union was first after the regular competition and it did not receive an extra half when the points were halved.
In short: with an equal number of points, Union becomes champion, Anderlecht second and Club Brugge third.
