Rome, May 4, 2022 – By majority Giovanni Melillo was elected by the CSM new national anti-mafia and anti-terrorism prosecutor. The 61-year-old magistrate of Foggia, head of the cabinet of Andrea Orlando when he was Minister of Justice, and today head of the Naples prosecutor’s office, he was appointed by majority with 13 votes, the plenum plenum of the High Council of the Judiciary. The great loser is Nicola Gratteri, the other great aspirant to the office, who in any case obtained 7 votes, not enough for the head of the Catanzaro prosecutor’s office, however, for a possible ballot. Five votes went to the current regent of the national anti-mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Russo. Melillo thus takes the place of Federico Cafiero DeRahoretired since last February.
Melillo was born in Foggia on December 16, 1959, ed has been in the judiciary since 1985. The beginning of his career is as a praetor. Then in 1991 he landed at the Naples prosecutor’s office, where for 8 years he was in charge of the district anti-mafia management. Among the cases followed also that of the relations between the Camorra and politics that emerged thanks to the revelations of the repentant Pasquale Galasso. In 1999 he moved to Rome to fill the role of clerk in the general secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic. To the National Anti-Mafia Directorate is since 2001 as pm. In 2009 he returned to Naples as adjunct prosecutor. Then on March 13, 2014 he became head of the cabinet of the Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando. From 2017 he had become the chief prosecutor of Naples.
