Giro d’Italia finished for Biniam Girmay. The twenty-two year old Eritrean of Intermarchè-Wanty-Gobert, who yesterday beat Mathieu Van der Poel in a sprint in Jesi (first success for a black African in a competition of this type), decided to retire due to the sparkling wine cork that during the awards ceremony hit him in the left eye. Finished in hospital, the runner would not have suffered significant damage, but the doctors, as a precaution, still invited him to retire.
The organizers of the Giro announced it with a tweet. “Bini will be waiting for you soon on our roads” is the wish of the Giro. Girmay had already made history in late March, with success in Gent-Wevelgem, becoming the first African rider to win a cycling classic.
