2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games kicks off in South Korea
The 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games will be held in South Korea from January 19 to February 1, Beijing time. Around 1,900 athletes from 81 countries and regions are expected to gather in South Korea to compete in 7 major categories, 15 sub-categories, and 81 minor categories. This edition of the Winter Youth Olympics marks the first time the event has come to Asia.
The slogan for this Winter Youth Olympic Games is āGrow together, shine forever.ā The eventās mascot, named āMengjiao,ā symbolizes the gathering of thoughts and strength. The opening ceremony will feature a āUniverseā theme, symbolizing the infinite possibilities of young people.
Chinese speed skater Zhang Hong, the countryās first gold medalist in speed skating at the Winter Olympics and now a member of the International Olympic Committee, was appointed chairman of the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games Coordination Committee in 2020. Additionally, Gu Ailing, a double champion of the Winter Youth Olympics and Winter Olympics, will serve as the global ambassador of this Winter Youth Olympics in 2023.
The Winter Youth Olympic Games, held every four years, aims to bring together young athletes from around the world to compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and international cooperation.
