Hanfmann and Koepfer in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open

The German doubles Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer surprisingly reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. The tennis duo won on Monday in Melbourne against number four seeds Marcel Granollers from Spain and Horacio Zeballos from Argentina 7:6 (7:5), 6:7 (3:7), 6:4.

This means that two German doubles are in the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz had already won their round of 16 on Sunday. If both doubles prevail in the quarter-finals, there could be a German duel in the semi-finals.

Siegemund also continues with Krejcikova

Laura Siegemund is also in the quarterfinals with her new doubles partner Barbora Krejcikova. The German-Czech tennis duo won against the American Emma Navarro and the Russian Diana Schnaider 6:4, 6:0.

Siegemund had recently played together with the Russian Vera Swonarewa for a long time and won the WTA finals in Cancún, Mexico, in November. Since Swonarewa wanted to slow down a bit afterwards, Siegemund was looking for a new doubles partner and found her in Krejcikova.

The winner of seven Grand Slam doubles tournaments had previously separated from her partner Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova, together with the Australian Storm Hunter, is now Siegemund and Krejcikova’s next opponent.

“It is an honor to be able to play with a player like Barbora. She has won almost everything in doubles. I think we complement each other well,” said Siegemund after advancing.
