Aesthetic impact is the first purchase evaluation for a car. It applies to any segment and especially to compact SUVs. Category currently among the most popular on the market, because it is capable of ensuring more space, better habitability and a renewed sense of safety compared to segment B sedans. The aesthetic personality is one of the aspects that most belong to the new Hyundai Bayon: compact SUV designed to accommodate the needs of sophisticated and demanding mobility. It has city-proof dimensions, but a driving setting that is also valid for tackling a long journey in serenity. Compared to the Kona, the contents and the engine range are limited: Bayon is only available with front-wheel drive, in two versions and with petrol power supplies (1.2-liter four-cylinder and 1.0-liter turbo). Prices starting from 19,400 euros.

Hyundai Bayon: how it’s made

The mechanical and technical basis is the same as the i20. With the compact sedan it shares many other elements (including the engine range) and the organization of the interior. The style chosen turns out to be a successful fusion between the image of Kona and, in fact, of i20. The front area takes up quite clearly the setting of the upper segment SUV, with the upper headlights almost integrated into the bonnet and the lower ones with an attractive design. The silhouette of the rear lights develops seamlessly from side to side, integrated into a glossy black surface that defines the contour of a sloping rear window. Overall, the image is bold, very close to European tastes for the segment. The dimensions speak of 4.18 m in length, only 2 cm less than the Kona. An interesting fact, which confirms how much the difference lies between the two cars in the contents: Kona represents a complete model from every point of view, so much so that it is available in numerous configurations (even full electric and 280 hp N sports). Bayon is proposed as a solution suitable for those looking for a car that is versatile and practical both in the city and on the motorway, with a simpler and less articulated choice of product.

The cockpit setting is practical and ergonomic: numerous physical buttons have been retained to make navigation between the shortcuts of the on-board entertainment system more intuitive and safe. The latter can be on a 10.25 ”screen and has clear graphics and numerous connectivity functions, without forgetting compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The logic of the satellite navigator is also good, showing the turning information with good advance and precision. The instrument panel is entirely digital and also 10.25 ”: customizable and easy to read, it helps to improve the perception of quality. Overall, most of the interior elements are made with good care, the materials are discreet and only a few low plastics are undertone. The seats do not disappoint, made with fabrics that are pleasant to the touch and with comfortable padding and good lumbar support.

The engine range includes two solutions: a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter four-cylinder with 84 Hp and a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with 100 Hp. Both powered by petrol. The most convincing choice favors the smaller but brilliant engine. The torque value is 175 Nm, which ensure good vigor when restarting and overtaking. In addition, the 1.0-liter is equipped with a 48 Volt micro hybrid module: a known architecture from Hyundai that recovers energy under braking and then returns it when needed. In this case, the manual gearbox has the iMT function: the clutch pedal is not connected to a hydraulic system but to a sensor that manages the detachment for gearshifts with an electric impulse. A solution that reduces inertia and (slightly) improves fuel efficiency. Alternatively, and only for the 1.0-liter engine, a valid seven-speed Dct automatic gearbox is available. The driving sensations, however, are quite similar to any other common mechanical solution.

Hyundai Bayon: how to drive

Although the structure is the same as the i20, the driving perception is less sharp and engaging: “the fault” of a much higher center of gravity and a significantly increased mass. The dynamics however remain on a good level for the segment, the steering is light and communicative and the dominant driving position makes it possible to evaluate the dimensions during maneuvering with good precision. Very good stability and roll and pitch are almost completely absent. Braking is also convincing, which does not seem to show any particular uncertainties. At the end of the test, the consumption figure recorded by the on-board computer was 6.0 liters / 100 km, a value obtained after traveling in the mixed cycle of 77 km.

Hyundai Bayon: in conclusion

This crossover is a product designed to meet the needs of complex and demanding urban mobility. It has dimensions that convey a sense of security, an engine range (perhaps too simple) and a limited choice of trim levels (XClass and Xline). It aims to be a city subcompact on an SUV body. However, satisfactory driving dynamics and technological equipment are certainly in step with the times. The naturally aspirated 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine will be available exclusively for the Italian market also in the LPG version.
