“The moment of separation is always complicated, especially when the decision is made.
Salerno got inside me in just a few months. Around the streets, fans and ordinary people stop me, with regret and displeasure, for a greeting, a photo, a handshake.
The only word I feel like saying from my heart now is: ‘thank you’. For the welcome, esteem and trust”. This was written on social media by Filippo Inzaghi, former Salernitana coach who wanted to thank the environment without sparing any jabs at the owners and management.
“I don’t feel the weight of a failure, I feel – he states – the weakness of an unfinished mission not by my will, together with the great sense of responsibility for a city and one of the finest fans in Italy. I confirm that twice I have I tried to shake up the environment from within, fearing my resignation but I was always persuaded to continue because ultimately only one sentence is valid for me too: until the end”.
“I married the project with transparency – continues Inzaghi – and the latter is what I would have wanted, especially on the market which, in my opinion, was late and not in line. Director Sabatini’s consolatory phrases are of little use today, also because I don’t see the point in apologizing for one’s own mistake and chopping off the head of another. I live for football and for the loyalty it taught me, that’s why I love the fans, because they are loyal and unfortunately that’s what I would also like within the environment but perhaps I’m utopian.”
Finally, Inzaghi wished Salernitana good luck. “It would be of little use to say that Lady Luck with us has turned her head the other way. Now I hope everything returns to turn as the place deserves and I wish my players to continue the growth path that began 3 months ago together! I hug them everyone with affection, I embrace you all with affection and always ‘Macte animo'”.
