Princess Mako and fiancé Kei Komuro

Tokyo, September 26, 2021 – Ready to renounce not only the title of princess but also the government compensation that she would be entitled to after marriage. All for love. Mako of Japan, eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and grandson ofemperor Naruhito, she is determined to marry her bourgeois boyfriend, her same age and former college friend, Kei Komuro, and for this reason he will lose his royal title. But now she would be ready to give up money too. Compensation – estimated around 152 million yen (1.17 million euros) – was designed to guarantee ‘the maintenance of a dignified life’ after removal from the family. Mako, 29 years old as the betrothed, has hinted that he prefers to refuse the allowance. It would be the first time since the end of the Second World War, the Japanese media point out. To weigh the criticisms raised by the press on the marriage project, due to a financial dispute that involved Komuro’s mother and her ex-partner, who according to the reconstruction of the facts would have financed the education of the young man. In April, Komuro himself – who is studying in the United States to obtain a specialization in law – made a commitment to personally repay the sum of money.

Marriage has already undergone two referrals. Mako and Kei met at the International Christian University of Tokyo thanks to a mutual friend. The official engagement had been announced in November 2017. The wedding seemed imminent. But in February 2018 the couple had turned around and declared they wanted to take more time. At the end of 2020, Prince Akishino, Mako’s father and younger brother of the current sovereign, said he was in favor of the marriage of his eldest daughter, putting an end to the concerns raised after the engagement and the controversial postponement of the wedding. Komuro is expected in Japan tomorrow and by October the couple is expected to get married in the Tokyo municipality, where, according to the local press, no solemn ceremony is currently planned. After the wedding, Mako will leave her residence in the center of the capital and will follow her husband to the United States.

Many stories haven’t been told in English regarding Kei Komuro, and most Japanese nations don’t celebrate their marriage. This is because Kei Komuro hasn’t shown honesty and integrity for his alleged career fraud when applying for jobs. His past allegations include fraudulently obtaining a work visa, his family’s money trouble, ongoing trouble between his mother and her employers, which raises questions of qualification of being Mako’s husband.
