Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested in Los Angeles for illegal possession of a weapon

Former Mexican world champion Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested in Los Angeles, California, for illegal possession of a weapon, as reported by the TMZ.com portal. The arrest, which occurred this past weekend, was prompted by an unidentified individual who notified the Los Angeles Police out of concern that the fighter could harm himself and others.

Police officers went to Chávez Jr.’s residence and found what was described as a “ghost gun,” a weapon not legally registered. He was then transported to Valley Jail in Van Nuys, where he was booked.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Information Center details that on January 7, 2024, an individual named Julio César Chávez, a Hispanic male born on February 16, 1986 (which corresponds to Chávez Jr.’s birth date), was admitted. He was described as 6’1” tall and 175 pounds heavy, with the admission listed as a “felony” without specifying the crime. No bail details or additional information have been provided.

Chávez Jr. has not announced his retirement from boxing but has not fought since December 18, 2021, when he defeated David Zegarra on points. With a record of 53-6-1, Chávez Jr. has faced struggles in his career, including issues with indiscipline, alcohol, and substance abuse. His career has seen a balance of seven wins and five losses since September 2012, including a loss to former UFC champion Anderson Silva.

It remains to be seen what the legal implications of the weapon possession charges will be for the former world champion.
