Late Glatzel goal: HSV celebrates derby victory – and postpones FC St. Pauli’s promotion party

HSV won the 111th city derby. Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team won 1-0 (0-0) against FC St. Pauli on Friday evening with a late goal. HSV’s hope of returning to the Bundesliga is alive. St. Pauli is still missing a win to return to the Bundesliga.

Robert Glatzel redeemed the home team in the Volksparkstadion in the 85th minute. The otherwise reliable St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj took a corner, the HSV striker headed in for an acclaimed victory in the arena, which was sold out with 56,100 fans. The goal was vital in view of the hoped-for promotion – in the parallel game, third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf won 3-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg. With two games remaining, Hamburg’s deficit is still four points – and 13 goals.

“We had extremely big plans, but we were hardly able to implement any of them. We weren’t good enough today – and didn’t deserve to win.”
– St. Paul Marcel Hartel

Derby loser St. Pauli is still just one win away from returning to the Bundesliga – and on the penultimate matchday the bottom team VfL Osnabrück comes to the Millerntor. Manolis Saliakas is then missing due to a yellow-red card. HSV will have to do without the suspended Jonas Meffert next weekend at SC Paderborn.

HSV captain Schonlau: “We definitely wanted to hit back”

“I think you could already tell today that we really wanted that,” said HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau, who celebrated very exuberantly with his teammates in front of the fan curve. It wasn’t an easy time and there was a lot of talk from outside. “We really wanted to fight back – and definitely wanted to win the derby.” Derby hero Glatzel thought it was “really cool to have scored the decisive goal in front of the north curve and secured the victory.”

St. Pauli’s top scorer Marcel Hartel, who remained pale this time, explained: “I’m very, very disappointed. We had extremely big plans, but we were hardly able to implement any of them. We weren’t good enough today – and didn’t deserve to be win.” Coach Fabian Hürzeler was annoyed: “We didn’t deliver.”

HSV with significantly better chances

The amount of pressure on both teams became clear before kick-off when a pack formed on the halfway line. During the game, the professionals seemed primarily concerned with not making any mistakes. But there were some mistakes – on both sides. It was a football miracle that the score was still 0-0 at halftime.

After a hair-raising bad pass from St. Pauli’s David Nemeth, Robert Glatzel and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer missed a huge double chance (20th). Four minutes later, Glatzel celebrated the supposed lead. But referee Matthias Jöllenbeck had previously classified a slight contact with opponent Saliakas as a foul. It was great luck for the guests that the video assistant didn’t even let Jöllenbeck watch the scene. A little later, keeper Vasilj sent a long cross and Königsdörffer shot onto the post (36′).

On the other hand, Oladapo Afolayan missed his great header chance (22nd) just as miserably as Marcel Hartel, who didn’t hit the ball correctly when he shot (27th). Johannes Eggestein finally headed past the goal from a good position (41′).

St. Pauli doesn’t do enough after the break

After the break the game became less attractive. At first it wasn’t about winning the game, but about not losing it. But HSV had to do something, Düsseldorf was leading. In the 62nd minute, the home team celebrated again – a header from Königsdörffer landed in the far corner. Jöllenbeck gave the goal this time – but the video assistant pointed out the clear foul by HSV player Lukasz Poreba. The Pole had clearly hindered goalkeeper Vasilj.

The St. Paulians seemed to be content with the 0-0 score in the second half of the game. The guests were able to keep HSV away from their own goal for a long time. Königsdörffer tested Vasilj again (77′). Immanuel Pherai’s shot hit the crossbar (80′). Five minutes later Glatzel was there.

The Kiezkickers tried to respond, but the hosts were there now and defended with dedication. In stoppage time, Vasilj saved a penalty from Ludovit Reis (90+7) after Saliaka’s HSV joker Masaya Okugawa had fouled. But it stayed that way with HSV’s not undeserved victory in the derby.
