Laura, to hell and back thanks to the heart of the island

The Siegemund out of the loop with a serious injury recovers and smashes Miami. Behind the German company there is a lot of Sardinia: a love and the Dinamo staff

SASSARI. Sardinia put her back on the field as a winner after a bad injury and a double operation, so much so that she triumphed in the doubles in Miami. Sardinia changed her life by giving her love, the portotorrese Antonio Zucca who became her coach. Two reasons enough to hear a little (a lot) of her the 34-year-old German tennis champion Laura Siegemund. She who spends part of her time on the island when she is not involved in competitions, where she has returned thanks to the care of the Dinamo staff.

Victories in Lyon and Miami: Laura is already back.
«I didn’t expect to win so quickly, especially in Miami which is a really important tournament. I gave everything possible during the rehabilitation phase to return as quickly as possible to compete at these levels. I’m happy, and then winning multiplies the energies in anticipation of the next engagements ».

Was it hard to recover from the two injuries?
«It is never easy to recover. I had some difficult times, but gritting my teeth and putting all our effort into following the path in a professional way I did it. I must admit that I was afraid, because recovery is never taken for granted ».

They describe you as one of great willpower.
“That’s right, I always want to give 100% and I consider myself very professional, very demanding with myself, very attentive to details, as I expect everyone who works with me to be”.

We start again from the double.
“It’s completely different from the single, I really like having a partner to interact with. And it allows me to play a lot on the net, which I particularly love. Furthermore, I really like the tactics that can be developed, personally I work a lot of intuition and I can read the game well ».

You have found an ideal partner in the Russian Zvonareva, together you have done great things, with 3 WTA titles.
“Yes, we complement each other very much, with Vera we are always in tune on the tactics to be adopted and above all very scrupulous and attentive to every detail, it is a bit of our strength”.

Have you talked about what is happening in Ukraine?
“Of course we talked about it. I assure you that it is not an easy situation even for Russian athletes, who are therefore facing many problems. But these are things that we leave off the pitch and that remain there ».

Are you also working to get back to the top of the singles standings, where you were # 50 in the world?
“The double is very useful to return to compete at certain levels and regain the feeling with the pitch, but the goal is that and already a couple of weeks ago in Stuttgart I beat a top 30, the Zidansek, and I won with number 5 at Sakkari world who then retired due to injury. It is proof that if I am well I can go back to the top even in the singles ».

Traveling the world has never been a problem.
“No, I got used to it right away, as a child I also lived in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, countries where my father, an engineer, had moved for work reasons”.

You have a degree in psychology, how much does it help you in sports?
«I need more experience gained in the field than that on books. That yes, a lot ».

A future as a doctor?
«Yes, after the end of my sporting career I would like it very much. It is a field that fascinates me, gives me joy, I would like to be a psychologist in the world of sport, also taking advantage of the great experience I have accumulated. During the pandemic I also started writing a book, it’s called “Wild card” and will be released next autumn, I reported my experience as a player starting from psychological bases, but in such a way as to be read even by those who do not play sports ».

Are there many graduates in the world of great tennis?
“There are more and more players starting to study and graduate using online universities. But they always remain a small minority ».

Suddenly Sardinia entered your life and it was not a second-rate meeting.
«I lead a life almost like a” nomad “, I travel often, but when I have time I come willingly and I like to stay there. I knew the island but I had never been there before meeting Antonio ».

Pros and cons of this land?
«I love the sea, being on the beach. And then there’s one thing I really appreciate: people’s attachment to family. What I don’t like, however, is the difficulty of traveling: when you decide to spend a period in Sardinia there is always an extra route, an extra journey to go and return. It’s a pity that there aren’t many high-level players to train well, otherwise I would have thought very seriously about coming to live there ».
