Bundesliga club HSV Hamburg has until May 3rd the opportunity to close a financial gap. Otherwise there is a risk of forced relegation. Managing director Sebastian Frecke is optimistic.

HSV Hamburg’s Bundesliga handball players haven’t lost six games in a row recently. Among other things, with the hard-fought 28:28 against the record champions THW Kiel, the Hanseatic team fought their way up to ninth place. But on Wednesday the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) caused a stir. The team will only receive the license for the 2024/25 season if it can prove that a current liquidity gap will be closed.

The club has until May 3rd to provide the necessary proof. Otherwise the license is deemed not to have been granted – and the HSVH would be forced to relegate. People in the Hanseatic city are aware of the situation, but also optimistic. “I’m sure we can do it,” said HSVH managing director Sebastian Frecke. Neither the HBL nor the club provided any information about the amount of the financial gap. All other athletically qualified applicants from the two professional leagues received their licenses immediately.

“We have always conducted the process in close communication with the HBL over the past few weeks and knew that we would possibly get this condition because we have grown continuously since our restart under difficult overall economic conditions,” Frecke was quoted as saying in a club statement.

The Hamburg team had already had their license for the current season revoked in the 2015/16 series. The club then restarted in the fourth-tier league and achieved promotion to the Bundesliga for the 2021/22 season. HSVH finished last season in seventh place in the table.

“We need to underpin our growth”

Now the club still has a lot of work to do. “Now we have to underpin this growth and our stability again this year with additional documents to prove that we can cover the liquidity gap calculated by the league.” The managing director has no doubts about this: “We already have the necessary commitments and “We will submit the required signatures and documents by May 3rd and then look forward to our next season in the first league.”

In terms of sport, coach Torsten Jansen’s team will be challenged again on Sunday (3 p.m./Dyn). The program then includes the home game against sixth-placed VfL Gummersbach. lno/ylau
