The Lombardy Cup also arrives in the mountains and in mountain running. After the success and consensus gathered on the track (2023 edition) and in the cross-country race (2023 and 2024 editions, the latter ready to end on Sunday 25 February with the San Vittore Olona stage), the FIDAL Lombardia Regional Committee wanted to create a circuit also dedicated to clubs for mountain running, a circuit in this case dedicated to the youth sector (Boys, Cadets and Students categories). The objective is common to what has already been seen for cross-country: on the grass the Lombardy Cup aims to reinvigorate the discipline of institutional distances, in the mountains the trophy aims to support a sector that is experiencing a moment of difficulty.
The Lombardy Mountain Running Cup will take place over six events, with a total prize money of 3500 euros for the best clubs, to support the commitment of the clubs in the trips undertaken by the boys and girls to live competitive experiences and to support them in their growth .
We will start on Sunday 24 March, at the beginning of the season, at the traditional Alpine hut of the Foppette in San Pellegrino (Bergamo), with the organization of Atletica Val Brembana: the second test will be in Premana (Lecco), in the homeland of the Giir of Mont, in the Lavinol area, on Sunday 14 April, followed seven days later by the individual Regional Cadets and Students Championship in Val Brembilla (Bergamo), again organized by Atletica Valle Brembana. In May, after the break for the individual tricolor Cadets and Students of Lanzada (Sondrio) scheduled for Saturday 4 May, it will be the turn of May 12 in Prosto di Piuro (Sondrio), in the suggestive location of Palazzo Vertemati, with the organization of the Valchiavenna Running Group. After the summer break, here is the grand finale: Sunday 29 September with the return to Valcamonica in Darfo Boario (Brescia) and the organization of the Athletics Vallecamonica, and Sunday 26 October in Morbegno (Sondrio), in the context of the “World Leaf Championship death” as the legendary Vanoni Trophy is called, directed by CSI Morbegno. Lots of innovations, new tests and traditional competitions, to give new life to an activity that has excellent events, but which was perhaps suffering a decline in participation numbers perhaps in light of an increasingly packed calendar.
