Lu Cuccaro, Liedholm and the dispute in the square in front of the church to be named after him: “We will address the Diocese and the prefecture”

LU CUCCARO. The Monferrato village of Lu-Cuccaro has never seen so many television broadcasters as yesterday March 15th arrive in front of the church of Santa Maria Assunta: Rai Tre, Mediaset and even the correspondents of the Gazzetta dello Sport. To attract them the battle on the naming of the square in front of the church that sees on one side the mayor Franco Alessio and on the other many citizens of the former Cuccaro.

The mayor would like to name the square after the former footballer and coach Nils Liedholm, a Swede who had a wine estate in Cuccaro and whose centenary is celebrated this year.

A Citizens’ Committee is to dedicate that space to Don Giovanni Caprino, parish priest of the town for 44 years and a great benefactor (about 2000 books left in the town and the churchyard itself donated to the Municipality). “He lived almost in poverty – explains the parish priest Don Germano Rota – to help those in need”.

In front of the camera also Pier Giuseppe Brusasco, former mayor of Cuccaro from 1989 to 1999 and president of the non-profit organization of the Colombian Museum of the country, today the Committee’s referent: “We have – he says – nothing against the naming of a street or a square in Liedholm, but not the square in front of the church because the former football player declared himself “atheist or agnostic” ”

«Liedholm – comment some citizens – has never given even a ball or a football field to our children. Unlike him, the former parish priest Don Caprino flinched to help those in need. For us it is more right that the church square be named after him “.

Of the same opinion is the lawyer Riccardo Vaccaro who has been entrusted with the procedure that has requested a meeting with the mayor: “We will continue our battle – he says – by addressing the Diocese and the prefecture”.
