“I soon realized that men treat us like whores, so I decided to become the queen of whores”: is the sentence pronounced in the trailer of ‘Madame Claude’ by Karole Rocher, who plays the role of Fernande Grudet in the film that is streamed on Netflix on Friday 2 April. Words that perfectly sum up the true story of the one who became in the sixties the most powerful prostitute in France managing a circle of hundreds of young women and young men serving wealthy, famous and powerful clients.
Madame Claude, he filmed
In Fernande Grudet’s true story (1923-2015) it is often difficult to identify the boundary between reality and fiction, also because she herself contributed to the confusion with a very romanticized autobiography. For example, it is not clear where his parents came from or whether, as some claim, he participated in the French resistance during the Nazi occupation. We know for sure that already in the early sixties of the twentieth century he had set up a colossal prostitution ring and that ran an exclusive brothel in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. It is said that among his clients he counted heads of state such as John F. Kennedy and the shah of Persia Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, industrialists such as our Gianni Agnelli and celebrities of the show business such as the actor Marlon Brando (expressly mentioned in the trailer). A position that guaranteed her wealth, but also made her the center of intrigue and blackmail. The plot of the film ‘Madame Claude’ moves precisely on this double track, putting at the center of the scene the moment when a young and rich woman threatens to end her empire.
Direction and screenplay were signed by the Parisian Sylvie Verheyde, previously author of titles such as ‘Stella’, ‘Confession of a Child of the Century’ and ‘Sex Doll’. The cast is led by the actress Karole Rocher, who had previously worked with Verheyde on the last two films just mentioned. Next to her we find Garance Marillier (‘Raw’, ‘Ad Vitam’) e Roschdy Zem (‘The cold light of day’, ‘Mister Chocolat’).
