The first round of the 2024 Malaysian Badminton Open wrapped up in Kuala Lumpur on January 10 with all Chinese men’s singles players and women’s doubles pairs advancing to the top 16. The competition has been fierce, with some thrilling matches taking place.

In the men’s singles event, rising star Li Shifeng secured a hard-fought victory against Chinese Taipei player Li Jiahao with a score of 23:21, 15:21, 21:18, after nearly 80 minutes of play. Li will now face his teammate Weng Hongyang in the next round, who also secured a win against Indian player Lakshya. The Chinese team’s other men’s singles players, Shi Yuqi and Lu Guangzu, also triumphed in their respective matches on the 9th.

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles category, the Chinese pairs have been dominating. Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan, Li Yijing/Luo Xumin, Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning all advanced in the first round. The national feather team Zhang Shuxian/Zheng Yu and Li Wenmei/Liu Xuanxuan secured victories, setting the stage for an intense second round.

In the women’s singles competition, the Chinese team’s Chen Yufei, He Bingjiao, and Wang Zhiyi all emerged victorious in straight sets. However, their teammate Gao Fangjie suffered a defeat against Thailand’s Busanglan and was eliminated from the tournament.

Unfortunately, the Chinese men’s doubles pair Chen Baiyang/Liu Yi and the mixed doubles pair Liu Yuchen/Ou Xuanyi were unable to secure wins in their matches, resulting in early exits from the tournament.

Rising stars Jiang Zhenbang/Wei Yaxin of the Chinese team, however, emerged triumphant in the mixed doubles competition, securing their place in the top 16.
