Manuel Neuer’s medical check was apparently positive. One day after the examinations in the Munich hospital, the goalkeeper from FC Bayern returned to the training ground on Tuesday. In addition to goalkeeper coach Michaelrechner, physio Knut Stamer also accompanied the 37-year-old’s session on Säbener Straße. Videos showed Neuer doing easy, goalkeeper-specific exercises.

Whether the national keeper can travel with the team to the five-day training camp at Tegernsee on Saturday remains to be seen. The media had recently reported that Neuer still needed time and would train more individually.

Since breaking his lower leg in December, Neuer has not played a game for the German record champions. Until the start of the Bundesliga on August 18, the keeper wanted to be number 1 in the Munich goal again. “I am fine. My leg has gotten better, more time has passed,” Neuer said on Monday before the medical check-up.

There were reasons why Neuer pointed out his good state of health when he arrived at the Barmherzige Brüder hospital: Sky had recently reported that the keeper was not yet fully productive after breaking his leg.

Exactly 213 days after his fateful ski tour, the national goalkeeper started the next stage on his long way back. With a few other professionals, including the recently injured or ailing Serge Gnabry, Matthijs de Ligt and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, he completed the internal examination before the start of the actual pre-season.

Now it should be clarified how far the goalkeeper really is. The Neuer side said reassuringly that the small delay was just a calculated adjustment to the rehabilitation plan.

Coach Thomas Tuchel plans with the 37-year-old as number 1, provided that Neuer is available at full strength until the Bundesliga opener at Werder Bremen. Representative Yann Sommer is supposed to switch to Inter Milan for six million euros. Alexander Nübel does not want to return to AS Monaco after his loan, while Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili from FC Valencia is only intended as a future keeper from 2024. And Sven Ulreich was not given the role as the only established backup in winter.
