Milwaukee Brewers sign veteran catcher Gary Sánchez
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed veteran catcher Gary Sánchez to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2025. Sánchez, who played for the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets in 2023, will join the Brewers to complement William Contreras behind the plate.
The 31-year-old catcher hit 19 home runs last season, with a batting average of .217, a .492 slugging percentage, and 47 RBIs in 75 games. Sánchez has a career .225 batting average, with 173 home runs and 448 RBIs in 741 regular-season games with the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Mets, and Padres.
The Brewers already have Contreras returning at catcher after his impressive performance last season, where he hit .289 with 17 home runs and 78 RBIs and was named the team’s most valuable player by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
In addition to signing Sánchez, the Brewers also made official the signing of injured right-hander Brandon Woodruff to a two-year contract. The $17.5 million retroactive deal includes a mutual option for the 2026 season. Woodruff is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
The Brewers seem to be strengthening their roster for the upcoming season and are making strategic moves to bolster their lineup.
