Monte Prama archaeological site Sardinia: two new giants discovered. What are

The earth returns jewels of the past in Sardinia. During excavation campaign started at the beginning of April on the site of the nuragic necropolis of Mont’e Prama, which rises in central-western Sardinia, in the province of Oristano, the remains of two statues were found. In particular, from the ground in the southern part of the archaeological site, they are emerged the torsos and other fragments of two sculptures representing human figures, both identified as “Wolf-type boxers” due to the large flexible shield wrapped in front of the trunk. The silhouettes are very similar to the two sculptures recovered a few meters away in 2014 and now exhibited in the Civic Museum of Cabras: the Giants of Mont’e Pramaas the ancient sculptures dating back to the nuragic civilization are called.

“An exceptional discovery – declared the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini – which will be followed by others, confirming the significant commitment of the Ministry to this extraordinary site, which has no equal in the Mediterranean. The discovery of two other Giants, in fact, takes place just under a year after the birth of the Foundation which sees the MiC, the Municipality of Cabras and the Sardinia Region engaged in the enhancement of one of the greatest testimonies of an ancient Mediterranean civilization. Two new jewels are thus added to this statuary group with a mysterious charm, capable of attracting the attention of the whole world “.

The evocative and mysterious group of the Giants of Mont’e Prama is thus enriched with two other units thanks to a find that certainly will not remain isolatedgiven the promising quantity, quality and conservation conditions of the archaeological remains buried in the southern sector of the nuragic necropolis. “While the small and medium-sized fragments are daily highlighted, documented in the lying on the ground and recovered – declared the Superintendent, Monica Stochino – the two large and heavy blocks of the torsos will need time to be freed from the sediment that envelops and so that what is necessary for safe recovery can be prepared. The discovery – adds Stochino – rewards the constancy and validity of the archaeological method of progressive exploration through phases of preliminary survey and systematic investigation, measured and carried out in the manner and within the time allowed by the availability of resources and by the parallel elaboration of excavation projects, restoration and display of the finds and enhancement of the site “.
