MotoGP announces revolutionary regulations for 2027

MotoGP announced this Monday the main changes that it will introduce from 2027, with a new and revolutionary regulation that aims to gain safety and make this sport more sustainable and spectacular. Future motorcycles in the premier class will reduce their displacement from 1000 to 850cc, aerodynamics will be significantly limited and all height devices will disappear.

The current technical agreement between the world championship promoter, Dorna, the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM), the teams and the constructors ends at the end of 2026, the fifth year of the contract with the current teams that make up the MotoGP grid, with The only exception was Suzuki, which despite signing an agreement at the time, left the championship unexpectedly at the end of the first year.

Ducati, KTM, Aprilia, Yamaha, Honda and the six private companies, Pramac, VR46, Gresini, LCR, Tech3 and Trackhouse (which took the RNF spot), maintain the technical framework agreement until the end of 2026 and have been part of negotiations for the next five-year period, until 2031.

These are the changes that will apply from 2027:

ENGINES

Starting in 2027, the engine size will be reduced from 1000cc to 850cc. This will reduce top speeds, making the sport safer, and increase mileage, making it more efficient and sustainable. The maximum diameter will be reduced from 81 to 75 millimeters, which will also limit performance. This makes the engines more relevant to the road while ensuring they maintain the characteristics that make MotoGP as spectacular as it is. To make the sport even more efficient, the maximum number of engines allowed for each driver in a season will also be reduced, from seven to six.

COMBUSTIBLE

As already announced, MotoGP will compete with 100% sustainable fuel from 2027, compared to the minimum 40% that the sport has competed with since 2024. As part of the new regulations, fuel tank capacity will also be reduced, so 22 liters to 20, and drivers will be able to use 11 liters during the Tissot Sprint.

AERODYNAMICS

Aerodynamics will be reduced and more strictly controlled from 2027, with the aim of minimizing its negative effects. The width of the upper part of the front fairing will be 50 mm narrower and the nose will be set back 50 mm, reducing the effect of aerodynamics where it matters, on straights and in braking zones. This will create an even tighter competition, with more overtaking. At the rear, the aerodynamics behind the driver will be part of the homologation from 2027, and teams will only be able to update them once a season to control costs.

‘RIDE-HEIGHT’ AND ‘HOLESHOT’ DEVICES

In the new era, starting in 2027, all ‘ride-height’ and ‘holeshot’ devices will be banned. This will control performance and make the sport safer, especially at race starts. This will also give even more importance to the skill of each driver, as well as aerodynamics, which aims to increase their ability to overtake.

GPS DATA

To further level the playing field, all drivers’ GPS data will be available to all teams after each session. Providing data to all competitors offers better opportunities for lower-performing teams and drivers to progress, and at a controlled cost. Access to this range of data will help make sport safer, and will also increase the level of information available to fans around the world.

CONCESSIONS

The current concession system, introduced at the end of the 2023 season, will remain in place, but as the new technical regulations will come into force in 2027, all manufacturers will start the season in rank B. They will then be re-evaluated mid-season. season, in the summer of 2027, and they will be able to move up or down in rank to have access to more or fewer concessions. This reactive system means that manufacturers’ performance is taken into account from day one, keeping the playing field as level as possible at the start of a new era.
