National Chess Team Championship kicks off with new forces rising

The 2024 National Chess Championship (Team) commenced on April 2 at the Qingdao Badaguan Hotel, bringing together teams of seasoned veterans and aspiring newcomers. The competition has witnessed the emergence of new talents challenging established teams, showcasing the vibrancy and competitiveness of Chinese chess.

Among the impressive performances in the first round, the Shenzhen team and the host Qingdao team stood out with stellar displays. Zhou Ying, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Chess Association, praised Qingdao for its early and successful development of chess, especially in promoting youth chess through a combination of sports and education.

In the men’s team competition, the Qingdao team secured a commanding victory against the Henan team, while the defending champion Beijing team showcased their dominance by defeating the formidable Chongqing team. However, the Shandong team, a favorite for the championship, suffered a setback in their opening match against the young and energetic Shanghai team.

In the women’s team category, the Tianjin team led by Xiao Yiyi and the Jiangsu team spearheaded by Guo Qi delivered strong performances, setting the stage for intense competition in the coming rounds.

The National Chess Team Championship serves as a platform for both experienced players and rising stars to showcase their skills and compete at a high level.
