Two days before the last Bundesliga matchday, Julian Nagelsmann will announce his squad for the European Football Championship. As the DFB announced on Friday, the national coach will name his squad for the home tournament on May 16th at 1 p.m. in Berlin.

It is eagerly awaited whether Nagelsmann will stick to his personnel plan with many young, inexperienced players as challengers for the regular players from the March international games in France (2:0) and against the Netherlands (2:1) and instead rely on experienced players like Mats Hummels, Leon Goretzka or Robin Gosens waived.

It is now also clear how many players Nagelsmann is allowed to nominate: The European Football Union UEFA announced on Friday that it is increasing the maximum size of the squad for the tournament from 23 to up to 26 players per country. The national coach actually preferred a smaller squad, as he recently admitted.

DFB team completes training camp in Thuringia

Ten days after the nomination, the national soccer team’s first training camp begins in Blankenhain in Thuringia. However, it is still uncertain how many of his European Championship players Nagelsmann will have available.

The 36-year-old will have to do without all the players who will be in the Champions League final in London on June 1st. Professionals from FC Bayern Munich or Real Madrid and possibly also from Borussia Dortmund will also be missing from the European Championship test against Ukraine on June 3rd (8:45 p.m./ARD) in Nuremberg.

The players from Bayer Leverkusen, who will play against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB Cup final on May 25th, will arrive a few days late.

Final nomination on June 7th

On May 31st, the DFB entourage will move from Thuringia to the EM quarters in Herzogenaurach. Preparations will continue there until the second and final test against Greece in Mönchengladbach on June 7th. Shortly after the game, the deadline for the final nomination of 23 or 26 players to UEFA ends at midnight.

After a day off, the DFB stars will return to their tournament accommodation in Franconia on June 9th. The opening game in Munich against Scotland is on June 14th. The remaining group games will take place on June 19th in Stuttgart against Hungary and on June 23rd in Frankfurt against Switzerland.
