If a return to the Premier League seems at least as unlikely as the bench of any top European club, the English press leafs through the daisies to glimpse the professional future of Josè Mourinho, who has always been courted by the Portuguese national team, flattered by the Brazilian one, but with the true ambition to coach in the United States. According to the Sun, the MLS is in fact the most likely destination for the now former Roma coach, who has never hidden his desire to work overseas. “I love the American mentality, the people are very open-minded,” he recently told Sports Illustrated.
For the moment, however, there are no negotiations with American clubs, nor any fresh contacts with the Brazilian Football Federation which is looking for an alternative to Carlo Ancelotti after his renewal with Real Madrid. If the Saudi option has remained in the background so far, the possible appointment as coach of Portugal is back in the news. Mourinho – the BBC recalls – has always said he wanted to end his career as coach of his national team, but he seemed to want to postpone that moment until 2030 when the Portuguese team will co-organise the European Championship. The sudden end with Roma could accelerate his return home.
