The first Olympic Games were probably in Greece about 2,800 years ago. Even then, a fire burned throughout the games in honor of the goddess Hestia. In the 20th century, the organizers of the Games remembered this. In 1928 there was an Olympic flame again for the first time. That was in the city of Amsterdam in the country Netherlands. In 1936 there was a torch relay for the first time. That was at the Olympic Games during the Nazi era, in Berlin in 1936. The torch relay still exists today. The fire is lit in Olympia, Greece, using a special mirror that catches the light of the sun. Many runners then make it through different countries to the city where the Olympic Games are taking place.
