Every time it seems to be the good one, then something gets in the way and the first MotoGP victory for Pecco Bagnaia from Chivasso is postponed to the next opportunity. On Sunday, on the Red Bull Ring in Austria, it really seemed the right time: splendid qualifying (second place just 44 thousandths from poleman Jorge Martin, who will then win the race) and a rocket start that earned the Chivassese centaur the head of the race, all on a traditionally friendly Ducati track. Everything is fine? Yes, but only until the third lap, when the rain forced everyone to the pits and then returned to the track with the wet tires. And there something happened: «I’m really sorry for how today’s race went. The first start was perfect even if I didn’t feel completely at ease with the front tire – admits Pecco with his usual frankness -. Unfortunately, at the restart I no longer had the same feeling with the rear of the bike and this prevented me from riding in the same way. Too bad because we really had a great opportunity to fight for the victory ».
In the end Bagnaia will be only 11th and it is a small consolation to see that once again he has done better than his teammate Jack Miller, who crashed in the final. Quartararo is now on the run in the standings (172 points), but Pecco, with his 114 is in the wake of Zarco (132) and Mir (121): the games for the world podium are very open. Sunday will be repeated, on the same stage: the World Championship will still be at the Red Bull Ring: we have to start from those first laps in the lead to finally seek the victory that could turn the championship and Pecco’s career around. –
