CAGLIARI. Sardinian basketball in mourning. Mario Vascellari, an authentic legend of island basketball, died in Cagliari at the age of 69. In fact, Vascellari was one of the protagonists of the legendary Brill, the Cagliari team that managed in the 70s to climb the rankings of the first Sardinian basketball team to play in Serie A.

He played with Brill from 1969 to 1976. Then his long career, which even ended in C2 at the age of 49, continued with the shirts of Libertas Oristanese, again Olimpia (the club that was sponsored by Brill in Serie A) and again from ’81 to 84 with the Esperia. Up to playing in 2000 the last game in C2 with his children.

He is remembered many battles won and in particular a historic success in which he was decisive when in 1973 the Brill won at the Cagliari stadium against Ignis 76-75, beating the dominatrix of the national and European basketball scene in those years. On the facebook profile of the former player from Cagliari there are many messages of condolence for an athlete and a wonderful person who has left an indelible trace in Sardinian sport.
