Cruz Azul Dominates Pumas in First Leg of Quarterfinals
Cruz Azul put on an impressive performance as they defeated Pumas 0-2 in the First Leg of the Quarterfinals of the Clausura 2024 tournament. Nacho Rivero and Lorenzo Faravelli scored for the visitors at CU, giving them the upper hand heading into the Vuelta duel at Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium.
The first half saw Cruz Azul controlling possession, but Pumas had more dangerous opportunities. However, they were unable to capitalize on their chances and fell behind due to defensive errors.
In the 26th minute, Cruz Azul took the lead after a defensive mistake by Pumas allowed Nacho Rivero to score the opening goal. The Uruguayan forward made it 0-1 with a powerful strike, marking his 150th game with the team.
Nacho Rivero was almost sent off later in the match after a foul on Adrián Aldrete, but the referee opted to caution him instead. Argentine midfielder Lorenzo Faravelli then extended Cruz Azul’s lead in the 57th minute, with Rodrigo Huescas providing the assist.
With a two-goal advantage, Cruz Azul now have the upper hand going into the second leg. Pumas will need to secure a three-goal victory without conceding in order to advance to the Semifinals.
Both teams will be looking to put on a strong performance in the return leg as they aim to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament.
