Suzanne Schulting is disappointed in her Belgian rival Hanne Desmet. Both short track speed skaters collided last Sunday during the World Championship final on the 1000 meters, causing Schulting to fall and break her ankle. After that, Schulting says she hardly heard from her old training buddy.

“Well, she texted me at half past eight in the evening saying ‘get well soon’. Okay, when I look at it, I think that’s a bit little,” Schulting said in the Dutch talk show Sophie & Jeroen. “I think that’s a shame, because you have trained together for years. You have shared joys and sorrows for years. You go to training camp together, you travel together and you see each other every day. And then you hope for a little more compassion and empathy on her part.”

“Of course, she had a bad weekend. And that is very annoying. She wasn’t feeling well either. But the moment you see a former teammate step off the ice in pain, I would give a different reaction. And I think that is a great shame,” said a disappointed Schulting.

“I understand that your emotions are high. Because she has received three penalties in a row at each distance. But these kinds of things can happen too. And then you just hope that there is a little more sympathy. I had hoped so. But unfortunately that was not to be. Or that she sends something like ‘yo’ after the match or later that evening or the next day or the day after that.”
