Alajuelense Sports League Says Goodbye to Giancarlo González
In a surprising move, the Alajuelense Sports League announced the departure of Giancarlo González, captain and reference of the Manudo team. With parties failing to reach an agreement to renew his contract, the 36-year-old defender ended up signing with Sporting FC.
Marco Vásquez, official spokesperson for the Manudo club, expressed his sadness at losing González in a recent interview. “The departure of a reference and a player from our roots is always painful,” Vásquez said. “I am very sorry that Pipo has made the decision to leave for another team, but we are in an industry that evolves day by day, which requires changes.”
Vásquez also revealed that the club had made a proposal to González to stay for a period of 6 months with the option to continue, but González and his representative made a different decision. “Pipo will always be part of the house,” Vásquez added. “He will be like a Mauricio ‘Chunche’ Montero, like a Javier Delgado, a Wilmer López. It will not be possible to erase everything great that he has done in this institution.”
González signed with Sporting for one year, and the Joséfino team will play as a visitor on the first day against Alajuelense. Vásquez’s comparison of González to league idols has left many fans reflecting on the impact of the defender’s departure on the team.
