The English Football Federation also accused the player Sandro Tonali of making illegal bets on matches

The Football Association (FA, the official association of English football) he accused the Italian Newcastle player Sandro Tonali of illicit conduct, due to over 50 bets he allegedly made between August and October 2023 in violation of the federation’s rules (professional footballers cannot bet on football). Newcastle wrote on X (Twitter) that they were aware of the charges brought against Tonali, but did not wish to make further comments.

Last October Tonali, who previously played for Milan, had already received a ten-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) again for having illegally bet on some football matches. Following a plea agreement, the FIGC also imposed eight months of alternative prescriptions, which include therapeutic activities against gambling addiction. In July Tonali left Milan to join Newcastle, but the suspension also applies in England.
