Former Chinese Football Association Chairman, Chen Xuyuan, on Trial for Bribery

The first instance of the bribery case of Chen Xuyuan, former chairman of the Chinese Football Association, accused of taking more than 81.03 million yuan in bribes, began on January 29, 2024, at the Intermediate People’s Court of Huangshi City, Hubei Province.

The Huangshi Municipal People’s Procuratorate alleged that from 2010 to 2023, Chen Xuyuan took advantage of his position and provided assistance to relevant units and individuals in project contracting, investment operations, event arrangements, and other matters, and illegally accepted property from others equivalent to more than 81.03 million yuan. The procuratorate requested that Chen Xuyuan be held criminally responsible for accepting bribes.

During the trial, the procuratorate presented relevant evidence, and the defendant Chen Xuyuan and his defender conducted cross-examination. Chen Xuyuan made a final statement and expressed his guilt and repentance in court.

At the end of the trial, the court adjourned and announced the verdict at a later date. More than 30 people, including NPC deputies, CPPCC members, journalists, and people from all walks of life attended the trial.

In addition, it was revealed that the bribery and bribery case of Chen Yongliang, the former deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Football Association, and the bribery and bribery case of Liu Lei, the former deputy director of Wuhan National Fitness Center, were also being investigated by the courts in Hubei Province.
