“Anything it will be more like before “, with the war in Ukraine. The war will not end in a short time, it is the bitter reality that dwells in the country. The other is that citizens do not want an Italian military intervention. Political leaders who are doing better? Giuseppe Conte and Enrico Letta, but without enthusiasm: both in the lead but always under the fateful sufficiency. These are the main underlying data of a Radr-Swg survey conducted on a representative sample of the population between March 28 and April 2, 2022. But let’s start with how Italians judge the main political leaders.
In a staircase from one to ten (and with no leader taking a vote more than fully sufficient) the most appreciated, for the positions taken on the war, are Conte and Letta who take a nice 5.1 (the scale was up to ten), then Meloni (4.4%) and Salvini last rejected with a resounding 3.6. Still on a scale of grades from one to ten, Conte gets the highest grade (4.9), like Letta, for his choice on sending weapons to Ukraine as well as on the increase in military spending (4 , 9, Read at 4.6), but excels (5.8) above all for its ideas on welcoming refugees in Italy. Meloni, on all these fronts, sails around the score of 4.3-4.4 and Salvini is confirmed at the bottom of the evaluations, with another 3.6 always on a scale from one to ten. The overall average of the votes on the individual topics is a clear 5.1 for Conte, 5 for Letta, 4.3 for Meloni, only 3.6 for Salvini.
They change things looking at the appreciation of respective reference electorates. Here the primacy goes to Meloni (93%), followed closely by Conte (90%), so is Salvini (81%), badly Letta (77%). As for Draghi, the majority of the Italian population is completely dissatisfied with the way in which the premier has moved about the war, above all because he is considered too influenced by the USA (30%) or because he has not managed to obtain a leading role. plan in negotiations (25%). 54% of the Italian voters think so, who consider his action “not very effective or not at all effective”, while only 35% believe it to be effective.
But who do they see Italians like possible successor of Draghi at Palazzo Chigi? Conte is on the podium with 31% of the votes, followed almost closely by Giorgia Meloni (28%) and, more distantly, Enrico Letta (16%). The other sensational data is that Carlo Calenda, at the head of a small party (Action), overtakes Matteo Salvini, paired with Tajani, by two points (18% out of 16%).
Furthermore, pessimism reigns among the Italians about a quick solution to the conflict: the war will continue for a long time for 34% and the negotiations will lead to nothing for 23%.
If the conflict should be prolonged, the Italians are in favor of tightening sanctions against Russia (52%) but in the majority (48%) they are against sending other weapons to Ukraine (only 40% in favor) and above all they are clearly against (74%) sending Italian troops to Ukrainian soil. Finally, 56% of Italians are against accepting payment in rubles for Russian gas even at the risk of gas supplies (56%). One in two Italians deems it necessary to dismiss Putin but 70% say a firm no to direct NATO intervention.
