The Milwaukee Brewers have made a move to bolster their pitching staff by signing Cuban right-hander Vladimir Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez, who was recently waived by the Miami Marlins, has been sent to the Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.
Miami made the decision to part ways with Gutiérrez after a less than stellar performance in which he allowed three runs in just four innings. The 28-year-old pitcher had a mixed 2021 season with the Cincinnati Reds, going 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA in 22 starts before struggling with a 1-6 record and a 7.61 ERA the following year due to injury.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Gutiérrez made a comeback in the minor leagues last season before being signed by the Marlins in February. The Brewers saw potential in the right-hander during the preseason and decided to add him to their roster.
“He’s had success in the majors before, and it looks like he’s healthy and in a good place,” said Matt Arnold, Brewers president of baseball operations. “Thus, we feel that he could be a good arm to incorporate into our rotation.”
Gutiérrez will now have the opportunity to prove himself with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate in Nashville as he works towards making a return to the big leagues.
