National Table Tennis Team Announces List of Participating Events in Paris Olympic Games

Malone Failed to be Selected

By Yangcheng Evening News reporter Lu Hang

On May 7, Beijing time, the ITTF’s latest mixed doubles world rankings were announced, confirming the participating seats for the table tennis mixed doubles event of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The China Table Tennis Association announced the entry list for the mixed doubles and men’s singles events of the Paris Olympics, revealing that the “Shatou” combination (Wang Chuqin/Sun Yingsha) will compete in the mixed doubles, and the men’s singles will feature Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong. However, the veteran Ma Long, who recently won the Men’s Singles World Cup in Macau, was not selected for the men’s singles event, despite winning consecutive table tennis men’s singles championships in the past two Olympic Games.

Under the table tennis competition rules of the Paris Olympics, if the national or regional Olympic committee is qualified for the table tennis team, all players participating in the mixed doubles event will also be qualified for the team. This means that Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha automatically qualify for the men’s and women’s team events.

The candidates for the national table tennis women’s singles event are still being finalized. Wang Manyu’s recent loss to Indian player Batra in the WTT2024 Saudi Grand Slam has caused her to lose 3,000 points and potentially regress in the competition for the second women’s singles quota. It is likely that Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng will secure the two spots for the women’s singles competition.

The Paris Olympics table tennis competition will feature 16 pairs in the mixed doubles event, with the top-ranking pairs confirming their participation. Among them are the world number one Wang Chuqin/Sun Yingsha, the Korean combination Lin Zhongxun/Shin Yubin, the Japanese pairing Harimoto Tomokazu/Hina Hayata, the Chinese Taipei duo Lin Yunru/Chen Siyu, and others. France will also be represented in the event by Alex Le Brun/Yuan Jianan as the host nation.

Stay tuned for more updates on the National Table Tennis Team as they prepare for the Paris Olympic Games.
