Five games without a win, promotion is in massive danger: Third division soccer team Dynamo Dresden has reacted to the sporting crisis and parted ways with coach Markus beginning. There is now an interim solution with a former national player until the end of the season.

It was 20 years ago that Dynamo Dresden enthusiastically celebrated their return to the second division. Christoph Franke, the coach at the time, sensationally achieved promotion with the team. On Saturday, the Dynamo wing in the K-Block of the Dresden Stadium remembered the promotion heroes of 2004 with a choreo worth seeing.

“Neither money nor prospects, but heart and character,” read one banner, alluding to the success of that time – and possibly also alluding to the current team. Because that’s difficult, as was shown again on Saturday in the game against Viktoria Cologne (0:2). The bankruptcy was not without consequences, as the club subsequently parted ways with coach Markus beginning.

Dynamo’s leadership had the coach’s back for weeks. But the defeat against Cologne was the limit. Until the end of the season, the previous assistant coach Heiko Scholz, U19 coach Willi Weiße and Dynamo icon Ulf Kirsten will look after the unsettled team. Kirsten, 58, played for Dynamo from 1979 to 1990 before moving to Bayer Leverkusen. He played 45 international matches for the GDR, and then 51 for the reunified Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“The desired results did not materialize,” says the managing director

Dresden’s defeat against Cologne was the fifth game without a win in a row. The club can be pushed out of third place on Sunday. After the winter break, Dynamo was in second place, ten points ahead of third place.

“The decision was anything but easy for us. When we signed Markus Beginning, we set ourselves a common goal, which we continue to keep firmly in mind,” said Managing Director David Fischer. “However, we have come to the realization that the quality of the team has become increasingly rare over the course of the season and that the desired results have not been achieved.”

The beginning was in Dresden in the summer of 2022 with the aim of getting promoted back to the 2nd Bundesliga. This should be achieved this season at the latest. The team’s performances were never confident, but the yield was good until the turn of the year. Then followed an unprecedented crash, which reached its lowest point at the beginning of March with the separation from sports director Ralf Becker.

The bosses clearly expressed their trust at the beginning, but the sporting turnaround simply did not succeed. Only a week and a half ago, Fischer said that they would be patient when working with the coach. “There are enough examples in our past that a coaching change was made too early. For example with Uwe Neuhaus,” said Fischer. Neuhaus led Dresden from the 3rd league to the 2nd Bundesliga and managed to stay in the league twice. After just two match days of the 2018/19 season and the exit from the DFB Cup, the 64-year-old was released.

The same fate befell the beginning. Preußen Münster can push Dresden out of third place on Sunday. In addition, it is also possible for 1. FC Saarbrücken, who are two points worse, to overtake Dynamo on their own, as the Saarlanders have played one less game.
