Japan Defeats Uzbekistan in U23 Asian Cup Final, Qualifies for Paris Olympics
On May 3, 2024, in the U23 Football Asian Cup final held in Qatar, the Japanese Olympic team secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Uzbekistan team. This win marked Japan’s second U23 Asian Cup championship after 8 years and earned them a direct qualification for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
In the intense battle for third place, Iraq emerged victorious against the Indonesian team, claiming a 2-1 win and securing the third spot. This achievement also granted Iraq direct entry to the Olympics, along with Japan and Uzbekistan.
The road to victory for Uzbekistan saw them defeat Malaysia, Kuwait, and Vietnam in the group stage, followed by a seminal 2-0 win against defending champions Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, Japan, after securing wins over China and the United Arab Emirates, advanced as the second-place team in their group, eventually defeating Qatar and Iraq in the knockout stages to reach the final.

A crucial error from Uzbekistan led to Japan’s winning goal, scored by Yamada Fuki from outside the penalty area. With the top three teams of the U23 Asian Cup now set for the Paris Olympics, Indonesia, who finished in fourth place, will face off against the African team Guinea in the play-offs for a chance to secure their Olympic qualification.
The men’s football competition at the Olympics is scheduled from July 24 to August 9, with Japan, Uzbekistan, and Iraq placed in groups with varying levels of competition.
